| | | | | News & Information | (Add news) | Thursday, May 08, 2008 - Sunday, May 18, 2008 at 7:00 PM General Meeting with a Speaker The general meeting is at the Preston Tower Condominiums, 6211 W. Northwest Highway (this is the curved high-rise just east of Preston Road at the intersection of Northwest Hwy. and Pickwick; MAPSCO 25-X).
The speaker starts at 7:30 pm. The speaker is Melissa Prycer. Her speech is titled: The World Before You: The 1893 Chicago World’s Fair
The 1893 Chicago World’s Fair changed the face of American life forever. Not only because of the introduction of new inventions and foods (the Ferris wheel, picture postcards and Cracker Jacks, to name but a few), but also because the way we live and play were never the same again. From the electric current we currently use to the Pledge of Allegiance, written in honor of the Fair, the Columbian Exposition had a ripple effect throughout American history. How is it a part of your life?
Mellisa has worked in many museums over the years and is currently the Director of Education at Dallas Heritage Village. | Thursday, April 24, 2008 - FROM MOVIE SIG - AFTER-THE-MOVIE DISCUSSIONS AND NOW TO REVEAL WHAT I HAVE BEEN WORKING ON FOR THE USA FILM FESTIVAL THAT WOULD REALLY MOVE AFTER-THE-MOVIE DISCUSSIONS AHEAD IN TIME. It has been completed so that it could be used by people after the movie.
We're still modifying the homepage and will be putting up articles on the front page by people in the film community.
The site is cinemafest.org. Check it out. Leave some encouraging words (send me an email).
Now I can tell you all what Aurek Brillowski, Publisher of Park Cities Magazine, a sponsor for the USA Film Festival has been working on for the USA Film Festival this week. We have created a website, CinemaFest.org for everyone to use and enjoy..
After watching a movie and staying for the Q&A, we usually pause on the way out to discuss the movie with other attendees. Then the conversation is cut off as we have no more to say or we rush to another screening (for film festivals) or we rush to the door of the theater to avoid being locked in for the night. But then what?
You can now go to CinemaFest.org.to find your movie in the festival. You can comment on your movie and post Q&A memorable points, post the great contributions from your individual discussion group, and then post and keep posting any further thoughts, insights or epiphanies you may have about the movie since then. The directors and a producer for each film will also be given a login, allowing them, if they have the time, to read the posts, answer questions, and post any other information, thoughts, insignts, epiphanies, facts, and behind-the-scenes infomation that they want to share with their audience members, others who attended the festival, and those that did not even go to the festival. This way every audience member's comments will get read by all of the other people, both at the festival and anyone else in the public who logs in.
Filmmakers will be given access to everything that was said or thought about their films by people at the festival and by others in the public community, and the filmmakers will have the option to say something more to their audience and to the other people at the festival and beyond.
So please, by all means, go to the site and give us your comments. We're waiting to hear from you.
| Thursday, April 17, 2008 - April 20th, General Meeting Speaker On Sunday, April 20, 2008 at 7:00 PM in the Community Room of the Preston Tower Condominiums, 6211 W. Northwest Highway (this is the curved high-rise just east of Preston Road at the intersection of Northwest Hwy. and Pickwick; MAPSCO 25-X) is the general meeting. The general meeting is open to the public and is always free. The speaker starts at 7:30 PM and is Bruce Jones. Bruce Jones will speak on:
Helen of Troy - Just Another Pretty Face?
Helen of Troy is a household world in most of the Western world. But was she just another Pretty Face?
Although most of us grew up studying the Greek Classics, archaeological research in the last couple of decades has repainted our ideas about the Early Greek world. Our ideas of refinement surrounding Plato and Aristotle must be set aside as we explore the Age of Heroes, when gods and mortals often encountered one another.
I will argue in this presentation that Helen of Troy was probably a historical figure that not only witnessed, but was a participant in, the defining events of our civilization. The
importance of Helen is that Helen was the Ultimate Epic Composer. If a Greek wanted to achieve GLORY, he had to be sung about by Helen.
For over a thousand years the epics Helen composed were sung by all civilized Westerners. Her songs defined culture and morals. It is arguable that her songs were in their day as influential as the Bible is today.
Bruce Jones is a member of Cambridge's Royal Asiatic Society, SMU's Asian Studies Advisory Board, Dallas Library Asian Studies Board, the British Library, the Victoria and Albert Library, and the Southwest Conference on Asian Studies. Most of the Greek research was under the guidance of Dr. Robert Anderson at Cambridge.

45 Daze in Afghanistan - A Walk through Kabul
Dallas documentary film maker, Naeem Randhawa, felt compelled to learn first-hand what life in Afghanistan had come to. What is going on behind the scenes in the country that has been at war for almost 30 years? What is it like walking the bombed out streets of Kabul? What is life like for the women of Afghanistan? What is it like having tea with the Taliban?
For answers to these questions and more, come hear Naeem Randhawa, a filmmaker and writer who recently returned from Afghanistan. He will share his surreal experience of the war-torn country, the proud people, and the harsh beauty of the land that is off limits to most foreigners.
Naeem Randhawa is an independent filmmaker and writer. He has shot, directed, and produced his first film, American Ramadan (www.AmericanRamadan.com), currently airing around the country on PBS. His video work includes on-site coverage of the Katrina hurricane in New Orleans and Biloxi. He is currently involved in documentary work in Kabul. His blog can be found at http://ENVOYfilms.blogspot.com, his travel site can be found at www.JustSayGo.com.
